This reference portal contains all reference documents (e.g. the coding of species)and technical support material (e.g. reporting guidelines) needed to fill in the reporting format under Article 12 of the Birds Directive and to ensure a consistency by all Member States

3) Guidelines for submitting Article 12 data

The XML schemas providing the technical specification of the dataset to be submitted as the Article 12 report are available here.

Examples of XML documents are available here

These xml schemas provides technical specification of the datasets to be submitted as a national report under the Article 12 of the Birds Directive for the period 2008-2012 and as a national report under the Article 17 of the Habitats Directive for the period 2007-2013.

The original xml schemas have been updated on 19th of April 2013. Use these schemas in order to prepare a delivery of the Article 12 and Article 17 reports!

1) ISO 3166 country-code

The EU rule of the use of the 2-letter ISO 3166 country-code (see iso.org) is applied with the exception of UK which is used instead of GB in order to keep the existing coding for site identifiers

2) Checklist for Birds Directive Article 12

(fields 1.2, 1.3 and 1.6 of the bird reporting format)

For information on this check lists please read the ‘read me’ note in the 1st sheet. The check-list of the SPA trigger species is included in the same table

If a species does not appear in the database, please contact the helpdesk to get a valid code (E-mail: reportingart12art17 [at] mnhn.fr. For species which are already in the database, the given code and name should be used.

3) Population units (field 2.2a of the reporting format on bird species status/trends

Recommended units are breeding pairs (= p) for the breeding season and individuals (= i) for the winter and passage seasons, with a few exceptions which are indicated in the species checklist for Sections 1-6. Use codes according to list of population units, as found here.

The reference list on threats and pressures is available here. The same list is used for the species reporting under Article 17 of the Habitats Directive and the Standard Data Form (SDF).
