The EU rule of the use of the 2-letter ISO 3166 country-code (see iso.org) is applied with the exception of UK which is used instead of GB in order to keep the existing coding for site identifiers

Recommended units are breeding pairs (= p) for the breeding season and individuals (= i) for the winter and passage seasons, with a few exceptions which are indicated in the species checklist for Sections 1-6. Use codes according to list of population units, as found here.
